if there is a limit, there is no way ur going to reach it through regular play :P it would be difficult enough trying to get it by farming deaths on purose

If you die too many times in game.... Samuel L. Jackson shows up and punches you through the head, he then stuffs you in a suitcase and runs off.

You come back as a a ghostly apparition in GW2 to help the newbies, but for God's sake don't tell them who their dad is

man your guild/alliance are some jerks to feed you crap like that and not even set you straight about it. the worst of things that can happen is if you are in hard mode and you get to 60dp as a party. then you are dead and are returned to the outpost from which you came from LOL. that is the worst thing that can happen.

Right, all the joking aside, there are two questions that this raised for me:
-is there an actual limit for the death counter? Integer? Long Integer? Does, in the fullness of time, the counter have a soft/hard limit? And if so, does the client crash or does the counter simply not work? -what is the minimum number of deaths for a Legendary defender of Ascalon? Just how many times must the enemies kill you to level them up enough? |

To the second part of your question ~ http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Death_leveling You can estimate the number of your deaths it will take, depending on your level, for the Charr to reach the level you decide to kill them at. A group with 2 Hunters does more damage than any other group make up. Your optimal setup would be all Hunters; however, I've had a group hit level 20 in as little as 4 hours (I'm lvl 19) or, worse case in 7 hours. http://www.presearing.com/forum2/index.php?board=18.0 has many threads about a DL session. |

I don't know what the OP asked his guild/alliance, and I don't know what they told him. However, I can imagine the guild/alliance response may have been thinking in terms of HM. Once you reach 60% DP for the whole team, any additional death causes you to fail and only get an option to zone back to the last city. Although this isn't a 'permanent' death, it does mean you can't be rezed anymore until you have zoned.
Not sure, but possibly there was some misunderstanding for the questions and answers involved. |

Tis an interesting question, and maybe that's the answer for all those people that want Legendary survivor on their old characters! You just need to die 9,223,372,036,854,775,807 times and then the counter rests, and BAM! Legendary survivor!

So, no limit to deaths. No deduction to your gold, no deduction to your level. No effect at all. |

this is actually an interesting question - what happens when you die too many times. it depends; if anet is using ints, which most coders would:
Maximum unsigned long = 4,294,967,295 unsigned - since you can't die a negative number of times. so 4 trillion and change. if anet is using unsigned long, 32 bits will buy you 4+ trillion deaths, at which point, you will be eligible for your survival title again . otoh, if anet decided to use their 32 bits for a float, the game will lock your death count around 1e8 or 1e9. at this point, the last mantissa bit will be lost. that is to say, to a computer, 1000000 + .0000001 = 1000000. it is NOT 1000000.0000001. this is because the computer uses scientific notation to store it, and the .0000001 is so insignificant, that the precision is lost. if this is the case, even an infinite amount of deaths in 1 death increments won't earn you survivor back. of course, if anet is using a double float or some such wasteful element, it'll lock around a much higher number, but the same concept applies. to speculate, if it is a long int, and you were able to die once a second every second, it would take some 136 years to do it. |

On the other hand, my XP doesn't seem to be overflowing so maybe they're not relying directly on the native word length. Edit: Um, sorry, I don't actually have 4 trillion XP, I suppose the beer made me loose 3 decimals, sigh. The real point is that there are libraries for dealing with very large numbers but the overhead probably wouldn't be worth it for a death counter, unless it's already in use throughout the game.
